SUMMARY

O-CEI at the Vision of Future Communications Summit 2025

O-CEI will be represented at the Vision of Future Communications Summit (VFCS), a high-level IEEE-supported workshop dedicated to identifying the key ICT research priorities for the next 7–10 years. The outcomes of this summit will directly inform the update of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for the EU, which will guide the development of FP10, the new EU framework program.

With 6G expected to reach the market around 2030, VFCS 2025 will focus on the technological and societal challenges shaping Europe’s digital and mobility landscape beyond the end of the decade.

Mr. Eusebiu Catana, Head of Innovation at ERTICO – ITS Europe, partner in Pilot 2, will represent O-CEI and speak about the project’s relevance in achieving future SRIA objectives, particularly for Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) integration and mobility.

His contribution will address two main perspectives:

Bottom-Up Technology Development

Dr. Catana will outline how Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and Open-Cloud-Edge IoT integration will enable the next generation of mobility, supported by real-time data processing, advanced AI/ML, V2X communication, distributed intelligence, and predictive analytics. He will highlight the challenges of developing Level 4–5 autonomous systems, which will require explainable AI, robust sensor fusion, ultra-low-latency 6G connectivity, and strong cybersecurity. He will also emphasize the growing importance of digital twins, large-scale simulation, and sustainable infrastructure to support safe, efficient, and climate-aligned CCAM systems.

Top-Down Societal Needs

The presentation will stress that future mobility must be fair, inclusive, and aligned with societal expectations. Key topics will include equal access to automated mobility, transparency in AI decision-making, public trust, the impact of automation on jobs, and the role of integrated urban planning. Strong data governance and responsible business models will be essential to ensure trust and long-term public acceptance.

In closing, Dr. Catana will show how the integration of SDVs within the O-CEI ecosystem will support Europe’s vision for Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility. Through cloud-edge intelligence, real-time connectivity, and adaptive digital infrastructure, O-CEI will help build a safer, more efficient, and sustainable mobility system for the coming decade.
