SUMMARY

Open-Source Strategies for Europe’s Sovereign Digital Infrastructure: Striving for Industrial European Open-Source Platforms

This workshop, organized during Eclipse’s Open Community Experience event, will focus on Europe’s need to strengthen digital sovereignty by building viable alternatives to dominant global digital platforms as the industry rapidly transitions toward software-defined and AI-driven systems.

Participants will explore how open-source ecosystems can support a sovereign software stack spanning cloud, edge, IoT, and AI, ensuring secure, interoperable, and resilient digital infrastructures while addressing emerging policy developments related to Europe’s new Open-Source strategy.

The workshop will feature contributions from policymakers and research leaders, including Rolf Riemenschneider, Project Officer for O-CEI Horizon and COP-PILOT Horizon.

The O-CEI coordinating team will actively contribute by presenting how Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum technologies enable interoperable industrial platforms and trustworthy data infrastructures across multiple sectors: software-defined vehicles, energy systems, and the telco-cloud-edge-AI continuum.

Discussions will also address the CEI-Spheres and Hourglass architectural model, and their operationalisation of open-source strategies.

By connecting research, industry, and policy perspectives, the workshop aims to demonstrate how collaborative open-source development can evolve into a coordinated European digital infrastructure capable of ensuring technological autonomy, trusted data exchange, and scalable innovation across critical sectors.

Participants:

  • Rolf Riemenschneider, European Commission
  • Tanya Suarez, BluSpecs
  • Antonio Kung, Trialog
  • Giovanni Rimassa, Martel Innovate
  • Ignacio Lacalle Ubeda, UPV, O-CEI Horizon coordination team
  • Representative of COP-PILOT Horizon
