On October 22, the O-CEI project will host a dedicated Special Session at the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) conference, highlighting the transformative potential of an open and federated IoT Edge/Cloud Continuum in enabling energy flexibility across sectors and borders.

As energy systems evolve towards greater digitalisation and decarbonisation, coordination between distributed assets, real-time intelligence, and advanced data exchange becomes essential. This session will showcase how O-CEI advances this vision through edge computing, cloud-native architectures, open-source middleware, and AI-driven orchestration to optimise energy flexibility and efficiency.

Invited talks will present the project’s overall architecture, large-scale energy pilots, and AI-based tools for smarter grid management and cross-domain interoperability. The session will also emphasise collaboration between energy stakeholders and digital innovators, demonstrating how open ecosystems can unlock new value in flexibility markets, grid optimisation, and energy communities.

The Special Session will feature presentations by:

  • Prof. Andreas Kassler (Deggendorf Institute of Technology) – Chair
  • Dr. Ignacio Lacalle (Universitat Politècnica de València), member of the O-CEI Coordinating team
  • Francisco Blanquer (CMA CGM), member of the O-CEI’s Pilot 4 team
  • Dr. Jussi Poikonen (Awake.AI), member of the O-CEI’s Pilot 4 team
  • Prof. Nabil Abdennadher (HES-SO, HEPIA), member of the O-CEI’s Pilot 8 team
  • Brian O’Regan (IERC, Ireland), member of the O-CEI’s Pilot 1 team

By fostering dialogue among researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers, the O-CEI Special Session aims to strengthen international cooperation and reinforce Europe’s leadership in open digital infrastructures for sustainable energy systems.
