SUMMARY:Eclipse Foundation Open Community Experience
DESCRIPTION:Eclipse Foundation to Host OCX 2026 and the Open Community for Research \nAs the Open-Source Leader within the O-CEI project\, the Eclipse Foundation will host two key events from 21–23 April 2026 in Brussels: the next edition of the Open Community Experience (OCX) and the co-located event Open Community for Research (OCR). \nOCX 2026 marks the return of the Eclipse Foundation’s flagship annual conference\, building on the success of its inaugural 2024 edition. The event will once again gather the Foundation’s diverse and growing community to share knowledge\, showcase technology\, and foster collaboration across open-source ecosystems. \nAlongside OCX\, the Eclipse Foundation will host the Open Community for Research (OCR) — a dedicated forum designed to strengthen collaboration between research projects\, industry adopters\, and open-source communities. OCR invites researchers working in domains such as software engineering\, AI\, data science\, cloud\, edge\, and IoT to exchange experiences\, present their work\, and explore best practices for leveraging open-source technologies in research and innovation. \nParticipation opportunities at OCR included: \n\nCall for Presentations: Researchers could submit talks featuring innovative projects\, case studies\, or technical contributions built on or contributing to open-source technologies.\nDissemination Materials: Attendees were encouraged to bring posters\, flyers\, rollups\, stickers\, or other outreach materials to showcase their research and project achievements.\nAttendee Registration: Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with experts\, receive valuable feedback\, and explore new collaborations within the Eclipse ecosystem.\n\nMore information on OCX 2026 and the Open Community for Research is available at: \n\nhttps://www.ocxconf.org/event/2026/summary\nhttps://www.ocxconf.org/event/2026/open-community-for-research-1\n\nO-CEI is proud to highlight the leadership of the Eclipse Foundation in advancing open-source innovation and community-building across Europe.

SUMMARY:OCX (Open Community Experience) 2026 organized by Eclipse Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Trialog presentation on the use of the Hourglass Model in the Open Community for Research track of the OCX 2026 meeting \nAntonio Kung\, Cécile Rabrait\, Léo Cornec\, Diana Jimenez-Bejarano and Estibaliz Arzoz Fernandez from Trialog will present a talk entitled “Using the Hourglass Model for Open Source Development in Research”. \nThe objective of this talk is to show how the Hourglass Model\, adapted by CEI-Sphere to study ICT ecosystems\, can lead to the identification of Open Source opportunities in research projects. The Hourglass Model provides a visual map\, organised into layers and dual-sided columns to illustrate the relationships between stakeholders on one side\, and technologies on the other side. The “technologies” column is further refined into three aspects\, capabilities\, standards\, and Open Source building blocks. \nThe following link describes the Hourglass Model and its application to the CEI ecosystem in the CEI-Sphere project: https://ceisphere.eu/hourglass-model. \nThe Hourglass Model has been applied successfully in the past 6 months in a growing number of research projects or ecosystems. In particular\, this model has already been used to describe the following ecosystems: data spaces\, digital twins\, self-sovereign identity\, AI\, and smart cities. \nThis talk will explain the five principles driving an Hourglass Model analysis: layering key enablers\, ensuring interoperability and reusability\, supporting regulations and harmonized standards\, leveraging standards and Open Source components\, and the four processes defined within CEI-Sphere to help projects performing this analysis. \nThen\, several cases of Hourglass Model usage to enable the identification of Open Source opportunities in different EU-funded projects will be presented\, including the Cloud-Edge-IoT O-CEI project focusing on the development of a digital asset builder system. For each of these projects\, we will present the project’s strategy regarding Open Source and standardisation activities\, the main Open Source building blocks used or targeted for use in the project as well as lessons learned and recommendations for other research projects.
