SUMMARY:OCX (Open Community Experience) 2026 organized by Eclipse Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Trialog presentation on the use of the Hourglass Model in the Open Community for Research track of the OCX 2026 meeting \nAntonio Kung\, Cécile Rabrait\, Léo Cornec\, Diana Jimenez-Bejarano and Estibaliz Arzoz Fernandez from Trialog will present a talk entitled “Using the Hourglass Model for Open Source Development in Research”. \nThe objective of this talk is to show how the Hourglass Model\, adapted by CEI-Sphere to study ICT ecosystems\, can lead to the identification of Open Source opportunities in research projects. The Hourglass Model provides a visual map\, organised into layers and dual-sided columns to illustrate the relationships between stakeholders on one side\, and technologies on the other side. The “technologies” column is further refined into three aspects\, capabilities\, standards\, and Open Source building blocks. \nThe following link describes the Hourglass Model and its application to the CEI ecosystem in the CEI-Sphere project: https://ceisphere.eu/hourglass-model. \nThe Hourglass Model has been applied successfully in the past 6 months in a growing number of research projects or ecosystems. In particular\, this model has already been used to describe the following ecosystems: data spaces\, digital twins\, self-sovereign identity\, AI\, and smart cities. \nThis talk will explain the five principles driving an Hourglass Model analysis: layering key enablers\, ensuring interoperability and reusability\, supporting regulations and harmonized standards\, leveraging standards and Open Source components\, and the four processes defined within CEI-Sphere to help projects performing this analysis. \nThen\, several cases of Hourglass Model usage to enable the identification of Open Source opportunities in different EU-funded projects will be presented\, including the Cloud-Edge-IoT O-CEI project focusing on the development of a digital asset builder system. For each of these projects\, we will present the project’s strategy regarding Open Source and standardisation activities\, the main Open Source building blocks used or targeted for use in the project as well as lessons learned and recommendations for other research projects.

SUMMARY:Open Community for Research (OCR) 2026
DESCRIPTION:Special workshop: Open‑Source Strategies for Europe’s Sovereign Digital Infrastructure – Striving for industrial European open-source platforms \nO-CEI Horizon will participate in the Open Community for Research 2026\, a two-day event co-located with the Open Community Experience 2026\, organised by the Eclipse Foundation. \nOn 23 April\, O-CEI will attend the workshop Open-Source Strategies for Europe’s Sovereign Digital Infrastructure – Striving for industrial European open-source platforms. This will bring together researchers\, industry representatives\, and policymakers to explore how open-source collaboration accelerates the translation of research results into real-world technologies. The discussion will focus on how open-source ecosystems can strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty by enabling interoperable platforms across the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum and emerging AI infrastructures. \nRolf Riemenschneider\, Project Officer for both O-CEI and COP-PILOT\, will provide the policy perspective on the importance of open-source ecosystems for Europe’s digital strategy. His intervention will highlight how collaborative development models and open digital infrastructures contribute to the creation of a sovereign European software stack\, supporting interoperability\, innovation\, and secure data exchange across sectors. \nThe O-CEI project will be represented by Ignacio Lacalle Ubeda from the Universitat Politècnica de València\, part of the team coordinating the project. Dr. Lacalle Ubeda will introduce O-CEI and present its key concepts\, including the O-CEI marketplace\, the development of blueprints\, and the role of the O-CEI platform as the technological backbone supporting interoperable services across pilots. His presentation will emphasise the central role of open source in the project’s research approach\, highlighting how O-CEI aims to make its results openly available to foster adoption and reuse by the wider community. \nIn addition\, the presentation will position O-CEI within the broader Cloud-Edge-IoT ecosystem of European initiatives and standardisation efforts\, illustrating how the project contributes to a growing family of initiatives such as the COP-PILOT Horizon and CEI-Sphere projects. \nBy connecting research\, open-source development\, and industry collaboration\, the session will demonstrate how O-CEI contributes to building a federated and interoperable digital infrastructure for Europe. \n \n

SUMMARY:Code the Continuum Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:Eclipse Foundation\, CEI-Sphere\, O-CEI Horizon\, and COP-PILOT Horizon will organize Code the Continuum Hackathon. \nThe event will take place on 30 June–1 July 2026 at the University of Cagliari. It brings together students\, developers\, researchers\, innovators\, open-source communities\, pilot teams\, and solution providers to collaborate on practical challenges across the cloud–edge–IoT continuum. \nParticipants will work on hands-on challenges linked to key application domains such as energy\, mobility\, and industry. The hackathon provides a space for experimentation\, knowledge exchange\, and collaboration around open technologies\, interoperability\, and the reusability of assets across large-scale pilot environments. The final thematic tracks and practical details will be shared in a follow-up announcement. \nThe event aims to foster collaboration across communities\, encourage the adoption of open-source approaches\, and explore concrete opportunities for integration and innovation within the European computing continuum ecosystem. \nRegister here to attend: https://ceisphere.eu/events/code-continuum
